Nudity in THOR Love and Thunder

First Comics News - Sat, 07/09/2022 - 17:23
No THOR Feelings over nudity

So, last night, here in Las Vegas in an empty theater where my dear friend Belle works, I saw the latest released MARVEL film Thor Love and Thunder. Now did I see it because it’s MCU cannon? No. Did I see it because it’s Phase Four of this bazillion dollar franchise? Nope. Did I see it because there was full on nudity advertised in a family super hero film? Bingo! I’m that kinda guy.

In a moment that is teased in the film’s trailerChris Hemsworth’s Thor has all of his clothing blown off and is left standing naked. The Writer/Director Taika Waititi talked the scene up on a recent appearance on “The Late Show Starring Stephen Colbert,” revealing that Hemsworth shows his rear end and promising fans that they “get the full Hems’ Worth.”

Speaking to press at the film’s premiere this week, Chris Hemsworth said that his decision to bare just about everything was a long time coming.

“But, I mean, it was kind of 10, 11 years in the making, that shot,” Hemsworth said (via ET). “In each film we’ve taken off another item of clothing, and now we just kind of took it all off.” Hemsworth then made sure to credit Waititi with the idea, adding that “it was all his doing.”

It makes sense that Waititi took the opportunity to add a long-gestating gag to the superhero sequel, considering that he recently called the superhero sequel “the craziest thing I’ve ever done.”

“I definitely feel like we put everything – every idea and every single ridiculous concept or gag or stunt or character – into this film,” Waititi said. “I couldn’t be happier with it.”

So, in relation to the controversial nudity/butt scene I will say that as a naturist and a filmmaker myself ( THE NUDELS OF NUDELAND TheNudels.com among others like UNCHAINED currently on Amazon) I’m not only in favor of normalizing nonsexual nudity and in doing so I applaud this but also later in the film, a few scenes later in addressing what occurred with our hero being forcibly stripped fully nude in front of a large audience, Tessa Thompson’s Valkrye states he was “humiliated” earlier to which Thor says “I was just nude” like it was no big deal and thus nothing to be ashamed of in any way, to which Natalie Portman’s character says “I was okay with it” and immediately Korg says “I loved it!” This was affirming that simply being naked is not some earth shattering event.

This was great considering all the families and folks that would go to see a superhero flick. Very positive for any body-positive movement. That’s the good news.

Of course the negative would be double-standard, that had it been say Natalie Portman stripped nude with Chris Pratt’s Star-lord and Rocket Raccoon watching her on display with vagina and breasts exposed, well then it wouldn’t be seen as comic relief, instead the criers would say that’d be some kinda misogyny. We all know that. But I suppose one step at a time. Overall I felt the movie was meh as a movie, overly woke garbage with expected predictable plot and CGI effects less grand than a modern video game; but that being said I’m always on the side of championing more nekkid fun.

“Thor: Love and Thunder” was directed by Taika Waititi, who previously directed “Thor: Ragnarok.” He co-wrote the script with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. In addition to Hemsworth, the film stars Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Russell Crowe, Melissa McCarthy, and Matt Damon.

In 1940 MLJ Comics, the company later re-branded as Archie Comics, published Pep Comics #1 and created the First Patriotic superhero, The Shield. They would go on to create a pantheon of superheroes including fan favorites like the Black Hood, Comet, Hangman, Jaguar, and many more, collectively known as the Mighty Crusaders. These heroes’ stories have been reprinted in England, France, Germany, and Brazil. They have crossed over to radio, film, and the pulps. Presented here is the 80-year history of the greatest superheroes of the Archie Universe by moderator Rik Offenberger (MLJ Companion) with panelists Vito Delsante (writer, The Fox), and Mark Waid (writer, Impact Comics).

Let's Read: MTDAA Part 4A

The Splintered Realm - Sat, 07/09/2022 - 14:39

Continuing through my fresh eyes reading of MTDAA: Legacy the RPG. I'm moving on to the weapons and gear section... this covers pages 46-62 (before we get into vehicles).

This section is quite successful in doing what I would want it to do, which is give a variety of weapons and gear options while also building in game flavor. I think that the little flourishes about the history of weapons and the various ways that the ants approach weapon design are helpful in the larger world building that goes on around the game. I think this stuff is indispensible now that I read it anew. There is a good selection of weapons and gear.

I don't know that the section on cybernetics is needed or that I'd want that the be part of most games. I was sort of backed into it by virtue of having a recurring villain be a cyborg, so not having rules for it would be a bit of an oversight. I don't dislike the rules, but I don't love them. I would just not include them in most of my games; I feel like they add a layer of complexity that doesn't give any real bang for the investment.

However, let me reflect on a larger thing here - this game is a bit more crunchy than I tend to like, but the nature of the game and the comic lean into that a bit. The granularity shows up in weapons, where there are enough mechanical differences between weapons that you can see and feel it. This is important; I know that when we were playing our first RPGs at 11 or 12, the differences between an M-16 and AK-47 were important to us as we played. The game does a decent enough job distinguishing these things. The gear section is not in any way exhaustive, but it still feels pretty complete. There's nothing I see as a glaring hole... the other thing is that your clout is going to be a finite resource; adding a whole bunch of filler you could spend clout on would only waste resources for the players. Simple things like a canteen or belt pouches are just a given; your standard issue gear is the fundamentals of what you might need that have non-combat applications.

Comments: The way the art comes out of the panels adds so much to the pages making the character seem to be almost coming out of the page. Things are not as they first seem here. This is one short story that hits with an impact. It is like a horror story and it delivers a frightening tale.
Than we move onto the bathing suit pinups.
Skye Mathers wearing a red, white and blue patrotic bikini looks gorgeous, artwork by Eric Basaldua and colors by Ula Mos.
The Black Knight is illustrated in a lovely black bikini with artwork by Alfredo Reyes with colors by Vinicius Andrade.
Robin Locksley is drawn with a strange look on her face and her pose is rather plain and so is her bikini. The artwork is by Jennifer Leonard with colors by Grostieta.
Evelyn Du Lac has a beautifully designed plant bikini. The pose is lack luster. Artwork by Leo Matos with colors by Gwenaelle Daligault. The colors turned out beautiful on this drawing.
Skye Mathers is drawn by Dawn McTeigue. The colors are beautifully done and the background is gorgeous. Skye is posed in an ordinary bikini pose laying down.

Gretel has an interesting facial expression. Her tattoos look good. Artwork by Alfredo Reyes with colors by Gwenaelle Deligault.
Cinderella does look nice on the beach. She does have a nicely rounded backside. Artwork by Mike Krone with colors by Ula Mos.
Dark Princess the pose could have been much better. The black and silver outfit is what stands out the most. Artwork by Leo Matos with colors by Vinicius Andrade.
Keres has lovely red and black hair. Her looking at something in the distance look does not fit the picture. Artwork by Eduardo Garcia with colors by Sanju Nivangune.
Britney “Red Agent” Waters is posed to look beautiful and fun and she does. Artwork by Alfredo Reyes with colors by Ylenia Di Napoli.
Jasmine this drawing is plain nothing about it jumps out at you. Artwork by Vinz el Tabanas.
Calie Liddle the background is gorgeous the sailboat such wonderful detail and the ocean breathtaking, the girl is very plain looking. Artwork by Leo Matos with colors by Ylenia Di Napoli.

Dorothy Gale is cute and in a small bikini yet the drawing is lacking in sex appeal. Artwork by Riveiro with colors by Vinicius Andrade.
Angelica “Hellchild” Blackstore has a lovely gothic look. The overall look works with the weapon in hand and the dog collar on her. Artwork by Alfredo Reyes with colors by Gwenaelle Daligault.
Anabelle “Belle” Dimarco she is illustrated the most realistic of all these woman. Artwork by Riveiro with colors by Grostieta.
Robyn Locksley has a lovely camouflage outfit on, the colors are beautifully done on the outfit. Artwork by Josh Burns.
Winter Suydam here is done with simple art, her hair is her best feature with the lines and shading. Artwork by Jennifer Leonard with colors by Ylenia Di Napoli.

Dorothy Gale has beautifully illustrated backgrounds and her face has a cute expression. Artwork by Keith Garvey.
Mercy Dante the hammock is a work of art. The woman is beautiful. Artwork by Riveiro with colors by Ylenia Di Napoli.

RESIDENT EVIL SOUNDTRACK FROM THE NETFLIX SERIES

First Comics News - Fri, 07/08/2022 - 20:58

WITH MUSIC BY GREGORY REVERET

FEATURING “MY HEART HAS TEETH”

— AN ORIGINAL SONG BY deadmau5 FEATURING SKYLAR GREY–

AVAILABLE FRIDAY, JULY 15 FROM MILAN RECORDS

OUT TODAY: ALBUM LEAD SINGLE

“VENUS FLYTRAP (MAIN THEME)” – LISTEN HERE

RESIDENT EVIL DEBUTS THURSDAY, JULY 14, ONLY ON NETFLIX

NEW YORK, NY (July 8, 2022) – Milan Records today announces the release of RESIDENT EVIL (SOUNDTRACK FROM THE NETFLIX SERIES) with music by composer GREGORY REVERET. Available Friday, July 15, the album features score music written by Reveret for Netflix’s Resident Evil, the first live-action series of the global franchise. A longtime fan of Resident Evil, Reveret crafted an action-adventure-horror score wholly unique to the new series, which unfolds over eight episodes and across two distinct timelines. Recording with a South African orchestra, the multidimensional soundscape incorporates heavy percussion, tribal vocal chants and a sound bed largely produced by vintage laboratory test equipment. At times sweepingly orchestral and others darkly industrial, Reveret’s expansive score straddles the divide between the show’s timelines with a genre-defying sound befitting the brand new story. Making its debut today is album lead single “Venus Flytrap (Main Theme),” a synth-heavy number featuring a signature vocal line and punchy drums recorded by The Goo Goo Dolls’ Craig Macintyre – listen here.

The soundtrack also features “My Heart Has Teeth,” a brand-new original song from a long-time fan of the franchise, critically acclaimed electronic musician deadmau5 featuring pop vocalist Skylar Grey. For his soundtrack contribution, deadmau5 drew upon his older JUNO and Jupiter synths forgoing trendy analog synths and sci-fi features, resulting in a grindy, downtempo vibe. “’Dystopian suburbia’ is the kind of vibe I had in mind when making this song.  It’s been pretty cool because I like that weird, corporate overtone of this entity that owns the village if you would. I just imagine what that would be like while roughly composing the song with of course the vocal accoutrement of Ms. Skylar Grey.  She’s an amazing talent to work with and she just nailed the lyrics.”  Look for the song to be available as a single on deadmau5’ label mau5trap soon.

Of the soundtrack, composer GREGORY REVERET says, “I wanted to explore and push the boundaries from the earlier sounds of the franchise while delivering a fun, action-packed score that would give fans something they could really enjoy and have fun with. The thematic material needed to be bold, to really serve as a continuous thread between the two timelines in the story. I bought this obscure lab/test-equipment that was originally used in NASA laboratories and is not really supposed to make music, but it sounds really interesting and alive. It gave the music a cool industrial edge and eventually became a main feature of the score. Much of the story is based in my hometown of Cape Town, South Africa, so I also worked with local musicians and recorded a South African orchestra, which is something I’m very proud of.”

MARVEL’S VOICES: PRIDE’S BREAKOUT HERO ESCAPADE CONTINUES HER ADVENTURES IN NEW MUTANTS #31!

First Comics News - Fri, 07/08/2022 - 20:32

This October, Charlie Jane Anders teams up with artist Alberto Alburquerque for a three-issue guest arc of NEW MUTANTS starring ESCAPADE

New York, NY— July 8, 2022 — Last month, Escapade made her grand debut in MARVEL’S VOICES: PRIDE #1 and captivated Marvel fans with her fascinating power set, uplifting backstory, and delightful supporting cast. And this bright new mutant hero’s journey is only just beginning! As promised, Escapade’s saga will continue this October in NEW MUTANTS #31!

Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author Charlie Jane Anders returns to Escapade’s story in a three-issue guest arc of NEW MUTANTS alongside Alberto Alburquerque. The arc will also feature comic strips drawn by Escapade’s co-creators, cartoonists Ro Stein & Ted Brandt! Further incorporating Escapade into the world of the X-Men, Escapade will join the New Mutants to learn to control her one-of-a-kind “swap” abilities so she can prevent Destiny’s deadly prophecy from coming true…

Personally recruited by Emma Frost herself, Shela Sexton reluctantly joins her fellow mutants on Krakoa in the hope that the X-Men can prevent the death of her best friend. But is Emma telling her the whole truth? Can Shela adjust to life on the island? Will the New Mutants accept her? Or is this crash course in Krakoan headed for a deadly pileup?

“I have been such a fan of everything Vita Ayala, Rod Reis et al. have been doing in NEW MUTANTS, so it was a total thrill to bring Escapade, Morgan and Hibbert into their world,” Anders said. “The characters we introduced in MARVEL’S VOICES: PRIDE #1 took on a whole new life when they were hanging around with the New Mutants and the Lost Club, and I’ve been having unconscionable amounts of fun. And as a huge admirer of Alberto Alburquerque’s work on No One’s Rose and other comics, I was psyched to hear that he’d be bringing this tale to life. It’s going to be a wild ride!”

Join Escapade and your favorite lovable mutant rapscallions in the start to a wild ride when NEW MUTANTS #31 hits stands in October.

Let's Read: MTDAA the RPG Part 3d

The Splintered Realm - Thu, 07/07/2022 - 23:35

Finally finishing part 3 (pages 34-45)... there is very little that is mechanical in nature (excepting the rules for promotion), and much of this is background/setting/flavor. I LOVE it. In a few pages, I get the gist of the world and the tone the game strives for. I had previously tried to use a set of comic book pages to establish the tone of the game, and that was successful... but this is much stronger. I like a lot of this very much. There's not much I see that could be improved upon. It's quite solid.

On a related topic, I like how the art holds up. I can see that in some ways, art has come around to me - the black and white style I used is now comparable to black and white anime comics in many ways. The entire industry has shifted in a direction that is favorable to me; while there was the expectation twenty years ago that a 'real' comic would be full color, this is no longer the case, and black-and-white work earns shelf space and younger readers. Those are big wins in my book.

I do see an opportunity in my work to layer in gray-scale backgrounds. I like how the characters are in black and white line work, but some of my favorite images put these against a textured background. I can now simply drop in shades of gray to backgrounds to create fuller-looking images where the foreground characters pop better. Some of my images run into a little trouble where the background has the same line weights and texturing as the characters, making for more visually muddy images. It's never BAD, but sometimes it's a little work to separate the character from a piece of rock or blade of grass; using gray backgrounds would solve a lot, and actually be much easier to create. I spent a lot of time cross-hatching sky and ground and walls; that would all just be a drop of gray (or a few shades thereof) - easy peasy.

I do see the possibility of getting my process down to maybe 2 hours per page (or even one and a half hours), which makes the idea of re-launching a comic a little more enticing. If I can turn out a few pages a week with a moderate time commitment, that might be worth pursuing. I might pop together a short story or two just to try this out and see how it goes...

Edit: I threw together this drawing in about four minutes... this is not bad at all for the basic look of the comic going forward. Wheels are turning...

Thursday Comics: DC, October 1981 (wk 1 pt 1)

Sorcerer's Skull - Thu, 07/07/2022 - 11:00
I'm reading DC Comics' output from January 1980 (cover date) to Crisis! I'm a day later than my usual Wednesday post, but I'm looking at the comics at newsstands on the week of  June 9, 1981.

Arak Son of Thunder #2: Thomas and Colon/DeZuniga pick up the story with the Son of the Thunder washing up, well, somewhere in Europe, where he meets Corinna, the beautiful daughter of Lord Hessa, and runs afoul of the mute knights that protect her. He's taken to the castle, where Hessa takes a dislike to him and has him thrown in the dungeon--but not before Arak discovers the knights are merely armor animated by magic. In the dungeon, Arak meets Malagigi a sorcerer serving Carolus Magnus. Before Malagigi can clue Arak in on what's going on, the not suspicious at all Corinna frees our hero and gets him to run away with her into the forest. It turns out Corinna isn't daughter but mother to Hessa. She made a pact with a devil, and she's used Arak to help her escape. In the end, she goes willing with the devil to Hell, as revoking his gift makes her age rapidly, and she can't take it. Malagigi and Arak set out for Charlemagne's court. Setting-aside, a rather Conan-y story, which makes sense and it works.

Batman #340: Conway/Thomas and Colan/Gonzales have Batman take on another one-shot villain, the Mole. The mole has been mutated by exposure to toxic chemical into a humanoid mole (which is convenient as mutation goes, since his nickname was "the mole" before), and he's getting gruesome revenge on the people he thinks are responsible. Batman puts a stop to it, of course. This story has a bit more of a horror angle than your average Batman story, but it's otherwise unremarkable.

DC Comics Presents #38: I've read this Pasko/Heck Superman and Flash team-up before in the DC Showcase trade for DCP. Anyway, Superman and Flash find the world around them frozen in time--just when they both need to rescue someone from a deadly situation (Jim and Fiona, respectively). It's all due to the machinations of an alien tyrant, but she tricks our heroes into thinking the other is to blame so they fight each other. The thing I find most interesting about this story is that some of it takes place at a location 102 miles from Central City and 322 miles from Metropolis, which might help in locating the two. Or might not.
The "What Ever Happened To..." backup by Wein and Saviuk is about the Crimson Avenger, the first costumed superhero to appear in Detective Comics. Lee Travis, feeling forgotten, is dying of an incurable condition. Seeing a boat in trouble in the harbor, he rushes to the rescue as the Crimson Avenger, stopping to save a young boy along the way. The boat is carrying chemicals and ready to explode, but he guides it away from the city, but dies in the blast. No one on the boat knew who he was, so it appears he will be forgotten, but he told his name to the mother whose boy he saved and she and the boy remember. A simple story, but the sort of thing this strip was meant for.

Flash #302: Finally the identity of the villain impersonating Barry's dad is revealed, and it turns out to be the Top, which, no offense to all you Top stans, but I find sort of anti-climactic. Anyway, most of this issue is the Flash dealing with the Top's accomplice, the Golden Glider. In their first skirmish, she mesmerizes him somehow, and the smitten Flash lets her go. And man, the people of Central City turn on him quick for that. In their second clash, he's onto her tricks and relieves her of the hypnotic gem that made him fall for her.
In the Firestorm backup, Ronnie is visiting the home of his girlfriend Doreen Day. He's trying to figure out the connection the Hyena has to their family. He decides to snoop in Doreen's sister Summer's diary, but the Hyena appears on the window seal and they do battle. Firestorm winds up in the middle of the Harlem River.

G.I. Combat #235: In the first Haunted Tank story, it seems that since now that the crew is in a Sherman tank, the ghost of General Sherman shows up to take over and Stuart is given the boot along with his Confederate emblem. He flashes back to the H.Q. in the Sky, where Alexander the Great first ordered him to look at the tank crew. Hans von Hammer was there to, in case you are interested, suggesting that Enemy Ace was dead by World War II. Anyway, eventually after we get several pages of how callous Sherman is, Stuart is back.
The second story is much better than that nonsense, and is sort of Twilight Zone-esque, with the crew picking up a soldier with a head wound, who keeps asking about whether Stein is still alive. The crew assumes Stein was his body, and they are unable to stop the G.I.'s reckless search, but eventually it kills him. His dogtags reveal he was Stein.
Rounding out the issue, with got an O.S.S. story with Vera trying to get an art book that supposedly carries a message to Control out from under the nose of Goering as she tries to escape his castle. Then there's "P.F.C. Snafu" by Kashdan and Vicatan where a G.I.'s screw-ups in an artillery squad wind up being their lucky break. Finally, in a "Woman at War" story by Laurie and Trinidad, a M.A.S.H. nurse in Korea, refuses to take the life of a Chinese soldier who had spared hers, even though the Chinese forces had killed her twin brother.

Ghosts #105: Better than last issue, but that may be damning with faint praise. The highlights: A Kanigher/Carrillo story set in 18th Century Sicily where a French soldier seduces a local girl with promises of marriage, leading her to commit suicide but after vowing that he will be with her even if in death. Sure enough, years later on the day he is to marry another girl, an earthquake sends him fleeing into the graveyard, where he winds up falling into a chasm around the dead girl's grave and being buried alive. A Haney/Zamora story of graverobber has Digger Duggan agreeing to take a drug that will make him appear dead provided by the doctor he works for. He's buried alive, but dug up by a competitor who mistakes him for dead, but ultimately winds up on the vivisection table.
Less good is the Allikas/Spiegle tale of a child custody battle that gets really ugly when the recently deceased dad tries to convince his daughter to drown to be with him forever. He has a change of heart, though, when she appears willing to do it. The less said about the Snyder/Estrada story about a farmer who complains so much to the ghost in a wishing well, the ghost strangles him and steals his body, the better.

Jonah Hex #53: In true cliffhanger fashion, this issue reveals Hex was not in the cabin when it blew up last issue. He pursues the kidnappers and succeeds in getting the kid, Petey Foster back and returning him to his family. Unfortunately, He returns home to find a note from Mei Ling saying that has left him and taken the baby. In the meantime, Mei Ling seeks a shelter in the house of Hiram and Ruth. Hex proceeds to get drunk and starts seeing illusions from ghosts of the past including his abusive father and his old enemy El Papagayo.
In the mostly charmless Tejano Ranger backup by Cohn/Mishkin and Veitch/Yeates we are introduced to Antonio Ramirez, a Hispanic Texan, who sides with the colonists from the U.S. against the Mexican central government, serving as a ranger. He faces prejudice from the gringo Texans, and ends up facing the spears of General Rojas' cavalry, as he is captured by Mexican forces.

Eve, Eve’s sister, and Wexler face new challenges, and a darkness from the past.

And when we were done with issue #5, I realized there was more of her story to tell. But not just hers. The whole world we’d built,” said LaValle. “Eve saved the world but what happens the day after that? What if the world doesn’t take too kindly to saviors?”

Jo Mi-Gyeong is a comic artist and illustrator based out of Seoul, Korea, best known for her work on Victor LaValle’s Eve and Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance for BOOM! Studios and the original comic book series Beastlands.

Inkwell Awards Announces Sinnott Inking Challenge Spotlight on Mike Deodato Jr. Event

First Comics News - Wed, 07/06/2022 - 20:52

MIKE DEODATO (2014 Lucca Comics & Games)

(New Bedford, MA/USA—July 6, 2022) The non-profit Inkwell Awards, devoted to promoting the art of comic book inking, has released the list of artists participating in its sixth annual Sinnott Inking Challenge Spotlight. This year’s Challenge features artist Mike Deodato Jr.’s’ take on DC Comics’ Wonder Woman, who’s celebrating her 80th Anniversary.

Deodato chose the character and pencilled an exclusive image for the Inkwells’ event. Early in his career, it was the artist’s 1987 run on the Wonder Woman (volume 2) series with writer William Messner-Loebs that propelled his name into stardom. The artwork will be auctioned for fundraising.

According to the Inkwells’ founder/director Bob Almond, the Spotlight Challenge grew out of the original Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge but showcases contemporary, “fan-favorite” talents on a more limited scale with various veteran published inkers. In chronological order, previous pencillers were Jim Lee, Neal Adams, Erik Larsen, David Finch and Ivan Reis. Reis will be the first Spotlight featured artist to later ink another featured artist (Deodato), both residing in Brazil.

The artists (in alphabetical order) are:
Gerry Acerno
Oclair Albert
Kenneth Branch
Brett Breeding
Kevin Conrad
Marc Deering
Elisabetta D’Amico
Michelle Delecki
Adriano Di Benedetto
Mark Farmer
Eber Ferreira
Christopher Ivy
Klaus Janson
Tony Kordos
Jose Marzan Jr.
Mark McKenna
Mark Pennington
Andrew Pepoy
Joe Prado
Rodney Ramos
Ivan Reis
Jonas Trindade
LeBeau Underwood
Dexter Vines
Keith Williams

Many of these pages can be viewed as digital pics on Bob’s Facebook account photo album or the attached gif of assorted files.

“We are thrilled for the strong response from such an esteemed group,” Almond said. “We realize schedules are crazy and amorphous, so we are very grateful to those who can step up for this one. I only regret the 2 month delay launching the auctions as the original art pages were held up in customs each way from the States to Brazil. But such scenarios are out of our control, especially currently with deliveries in general.”

The Challenge Spotlight furthers the inking advocacy’s dual mission of promoting the artform and educating the public. Blue-lined art files featuring a pencilled Mike Deodato Jr. pinup are sent to the artists to finish in ink. Each inked page will be signed by Deodato and the inker, and include a certificate of authenticity signed and numbered by Almond. All pages will be auctioned off as part of a major fundraiser in two to three waves, the first on Saturday afternoon, July 9 for a week, with subsequent waves in two weeks‘ intervals, at the Inkwells’ eBay page. As displayed in the  animated gif of samples, fans will be able to see the difference in the pencilled and inked versions to better understand how much inkers contribute to the art form.

“On behalf of the Inkwells,” said Almond, “our sincerest thanks to DC, Mike, Erick Korpi, and especially Joe Prado for setting things up, the participating inkers, and all involved for their cooperation, support of our program, and appreciation of ink artists.”

The Inkwell Awards is the only official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and educate regarding the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize the best ink artists and their work. Established in 2008, the Inkwells are overseen by a volunteer committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.

SHURI, KILLMONGER, AND MORE STEP UP TO PROTECT THEIR NATION IN NEW “WAKANDA” SERIES

First Comics News - Wed, 07/06/2022 - 20:15

The October-launching limited series also includes “History of the Black Panthers” backups

New York, NY— July 6, 2022 — This October, acclaimed writers and artists throughout the comic book industry will come together to highlight the rich tapestry of the Black Panther’s homeland like never before in WAKANDA, a brand-new limited series! Spinning out of recent events in John Ridley’s epic run on BLACK PANTHER, T’Challa is no longer welcome in the land he once ruled. Who is this proud nation without its king? This exciting new miniseries answers that question and more as each issue spotlights a different fan-favorite Wakandan character as they rise up to protect their great nation in exciting new stories by a wide range of creators.

In WAKANDA #1, writer Stephanie Williams and artist Paco Medina will start things off with an in-depth tale about T’Challa’s genius younger sister and former Black Panther, Shuri. Shuri proves that being without the Black Panther doesn’t mean Wakanda is without heroes to protect it – and that there is a reason she too once wielded the power.

“I’ve been such a huge fan of the Black Panther over the years, especially the evolution and expansion of the women of Wakanda. It’s truly an honor to kick off the new series with the Shuri story I wrote. I hope I can add to her and Wakanda’s already impressive lore.”

Each issue of WAKANDA will also contain a “History of the Black Panthers” backup story by writer Evan Narcisse and artist Natacha Bustos, providing for the first time anywhere a definitive overview of all the Wakandans who have held the mantle of the Black Panther!

“I’ve been a fan of the charm and scale of Natacha Bustos’ work for a long time and am thrilled to collaborate with her on a new look at Wakanda’s history,” Narcisse said. “The tale we’re telling will give readers a deeper look at how the Black Panthers of the past led the Unconquered Realm to glory and left a wondrous legacy that Emperor T’Challa still embodies.”

Stay tuned for story details and creative teams for future issues of WAKANDA and witness a grand expansion of the Wakandan mythos this October!
