Tales of the Splintered Realm

The Splintered Realm - Mon, 01/01/2018 - 19:49
I realized in the last few weeks that it had been several months that I have updated the blog, and I thought it would be a good idea to share what's been going on. I also thought that New Year's Day, since it symbolizes new beginnings and all, would be an appropriate time to launch a new venture of sorts.

1. An Update
Things have been going well for me academically. I received an email two weeks ago from my university that I have completed the first half of my doctoral program; I have earned 30 doctoral-level credit hours towards my degree in Educational Leadership. I have also completed a local program that gives me certification as a building-level administrator in New York State. This means that my transition from classroom teacher to building-level administrator is underway. It's been a great seventeen years as a high school ELA teacher, but I am definitely ready to move to the next phase of my career.

2. A New Venture
That said, I have had the wonderful opportunity this year to teach an elective in poetry and creative writing, with some very talented and insightful seniors. It's been a joy to break down stories to their nuts and bolts from a writer's perspective, and to examine how and why stories work they way that they do.

One of the revelations to me personally in this process has been that I am not a novelist. I have attempted to write a few novels now, and they have never found completion in a way that I have found satisfying. While I want to be a Tolkien, I am more of a Sir Doyle. My wheelhouse is short stories, where I can mine a single idea or follow a leaner narrative to its conclusion. I have realized that this gives me the flexibility to tell a wide range of stories across the Splintered Realm, and that over the course of time these would become a larger narrative. In effect, I am embracing a more episodic than climactic story form, where the sum total of the short stories may ultimately tell a larger, albeit circuitous, story.

This story is going to be about Mim and Rand, and their various adventures across the Splintered Realm. These are not going to be released in a chronological fashion, and I am going to jump back and forth across their story as the whim strikes me. I have posted the first of these tales, a story I wrote almost four years ago but recently revised. This is going to be the template I follow, aiming for 2,500 to 5,000 words per story.

I have published the first of these installments, and will update as I get stories done. My goal is to publish a new story at the beginning of every month, but that will depend on how life goes. This is definitely a side project, so time will tell...

Happy New Year all, and thanks for reading.

- Mike

RICH REVIEWS: The Resurrected # 1

First Comics News - Mon, 01/01/2018 - 19:06

Title: The Resurrected # 1
Publisher: Carnouche Productions
Writer: Christian Carnouche
Penciller/Inker/Cover: Crizam Zamora
Colors: Salvatore Aiala
Letterer: Cardinal Rae
Edited by: Erica Schultz
Price: $4.99 US
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Comments: It is the year 2032 Australia. Australia was attacked and then attacked once more to stop the first attack. Australia has changed and years later it is still changed. People can get a second chance by coming back.
Detective Cain Duluth is a man in pain. He suffered a great loss and is still dealing with it.
The Island of Sydney is inhospitable. Why are we told this?
The story does drag on and it needs more focus. The Aboriginal Australians are mentioned but only for a second.
The story you are left wondering what is it? What is this comic about? A sad cop yes but what else?
The resurrected are mentioned but not really explained or shown roaming around. How were they created?
What is the purpose of this comic? Why should people read it?
The art could use more focus as well. It is flat looking and has a rough look to it.
There is some mystery here and the story does just start to get interesting as it ends.

Weird Revisited: New Year's Day

Sorcerer's Skull - Mon, 01/01/2018 - 12:00
And here's part 2 of a Weird Adventures New Year's yarn from 2012...

Then the weird codger just smiles under his beard and says:

“Take it easy, fella. It’s just a yarn.”

And that’s when you realize you were holding your breath. As you let it out slow, it occurs to you that there’s a murmur of “happy new years” around and somewhere the pop of a champagne cork, and there’s a dame standing close with a creased brow and disappointed pout because you didn’t kiss her at the appointed moment. The moment you just missed ‘cause you were listening to some old man’s story about the end of the world.

You take a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. The strange spell seems to be fading with the old year, but you still have to ask: “So what happened. How’d the world get saved, anyway?”
The old man strokes his beard. “It just so happens that Father Time prepares for this eventuality. He knows that the agents of entropy will try to take advantage of the changing of the year, to try and force a premature end to time. He has a plan...”

The new year is born at the center of a maze--almost a giant puzzle box, really-- outside of time and the material plane. Here the new born year can’t be strangled in its crib before temporal custodianship changes hands. All sorts of nefarious forces send their champions to seize it or kill it, true, but Father Time has his champions, as well. He can choose anyone, but it’s often adventurers that make his list. His temporal champions must brave the challenges of the achronal labyrinth and present Father Time's hourglass sigil to the multidimensional titan that guards the neonate year.

Finishing your second glass of champagne, you say, “Guess the good guys won again, huh? I’d be glad to meet one of those guys that saved the world. I’d by ‘em a drink.”
The old man shrugs and puts on his hat like he’s going to leave. “Well, the thing about that is, none of those brave souls ever remember what they did. The maze is outside of time. Everything that happens there occurs in less than an instant and outside of causality as we know it here. No, I’m afraid none of them has any idea what they accomplished.”

With that he turns to walk for the door. He’s only gone a couple of steps when he stops and half-turns. “Unless, of course, someone tells them.” And then he winks.

“Happy New Year, friend.”

RICH REVIEWS: Riverdale # 9

First Comics News - Mon, 01/01/2018 - 11:20

Title: Riverdale # 9
Publisher: Archie Comics
Writer: Greg Murray
Artist: Thomas Pitilli
Colors: Andre Szymanowicz
Letters: Janice Chiang
Photo Cover: Cheryl – Madelaine Petsch
Photo Cover: Archie & Jughead – KJ APA & Cole Sprouse
Price: $ 3.99 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: There is a hands-on contest to win a car with ten contestants. Archie, Cheryl, Ethel, Moose, Jughead plus five others are in it. The other five are the first to go of course.
The art is nondescript. It does need to be more defined and show more details.
Cheryl shows she does actually have a heart. Her and Ethel may just be at the beginning of a new friendship.
Ethel does get what she wanted from the contest. It was not to win but it was about not losing. Ethel certainly is no loser and never was.
This story is heartwarming and will be sure to give you a good feeling as we watch Ethel doing what she knows is right.

RICH REVIEWS: Planet of the Apes: Ursus # 1

First Comics News - Mon, 01/01/2018 - 11:17

Title: Planet of the Apes: Ursus # 1
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Written by: David F. Walker
Illustrated by: Chris Mooneyham

Cover: Paolo Rivera & Joe Rivera
Variant Cover: Michael Allred with Colors by Laura Allred
Subscription Cover: Becca Carey
Classic Variant Cover: Bob Larkin with Designs by Kez Wilson
Virgin Classic Variant Cover: Bob Larkin
Price: $ 3.99 US
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Comments: General Ursus is illustrated perfectly as a gorilla with intelligence. His being a soldier comes through. It is great to see a series focusing on the General that was seen so often in other series.
The look on General Ursus’s face shows full well his anger at being told soldiers will be trained as farmers. This is a look you have to see for yourself.
Ape City is low on food due to humans feeding off the crops. So what will be done?
This issue touches on the very first movie of The Planet of the Apes. Here we see how apes act to an intelligent human that can talk. They view him as a threat to their entire way of life.
You are left wondering where will this story go next?

RICH REVIEWS: Vampblade Season 2 # 10

First Comics News - Sun, 12/31/2017 - 16:25

Title: Vampblade Season 2 # 10
Publisher: Action Lab Comics
Created & Written by: Jason Martin
Artwork by: Marco Maccagni
Colored by: Marcelo Costa
Lettered by: Adam Wollet
Cover A-B: Winston Young
Cover C-D: Mark Whitaker
Cover E-F: Danielle Gransaull
Price: $ 4.99 US
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Comments: Detroit is being invaded my aliens. Pink and purple colored ones that are illustrated beautifully. The huge one is destroying the city. The smaller ones Katie is dealing with one on one.
Katie’s costume and the blades want to just feed. While Katie does not want to kill. Katie also does not want to battle the huge aliens only the small regular sized ones.
The art is unique illustrating Katie as Vampblade the colors are amazingly well done. The poses though could use work. She is drawn in poses that just have her standing there.
Lots of swearing in this issue.
Katie is unsure what to do. She can fight or run or maybe both. She never wanted to be a hero, all she wanted was to be a geek girl running a comic book store. Now the fate of the world may hang on what she does. Lots of excitement is building here. Where will it go next?
