Top 4 Best Comics of 2019

Tue, 03/17/2020 - 19:00

2019 was a strange yet a strong year for comics. In the past 12 months of 2019, there were some of the best Indie titles released. However, the output of some of the mainstream outfits, such as DC, Marvel, as well as Image, can be well described as average with just one or two high points. If truth be told, the best work in the medium last year didn’t really come from the publishers with the glossiest names. So, to ensure that you didn’t miss the best of the year, we have come up with our best picks of the year. You can use this as your guide to ensure that you don’t miss any of the stellar comics of 2019. Now, let’s get started and take a look at the 4 best comics of 2019.

First – The River At Night

Publisher – Drawn & Quarterly

Maira, who works with a platform where you can pay someone to write a papersays that The River At Night is a reworked compilation of the material which first appeared in the much-hyped and well-acclaimed series, that is, Kevin Huizenga’s Ganges. This book again is a masterpiece where you’ll see a heartfelt sincerity and an inquisitiveness to interact with the people and the world around us. Further, it is an accurate depiction of phantasmagorical insomnia and the weird thoughts that it invokes in the people afflicted. Additionally, the comic has multiple moments that will seem recognizable to anyone who has ever had a sleepless night. It is witty, beautiful, and intelligent, all at once. I believe, if the book gets the recognition it deserves, it will surely make Kevin a household name.

Second – Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me

Publisher – First Second Books

This book by Mariko Tamaki is a touching yet fun take on high school relationships. However, despite the title, it not just revolves around romantic relationships, but rather uncovers the relief of overcoming the toxic influences in life. Brian, who offers online assignment help servicessays that the biggest winner of this YA graphic novel is certainly Rosemary Valero-O’Connell’s art. Tamaki’s work is achingly beautiful. The color palette and the variation in the depiction are outright beautiful. Moreover, it is lifelike, and the performances by every character in the book are outstanding, The nervous “me” from the title, Freddy, to Laura, and the other supporting cast is brilliant in every way. It is one helluva romantic story that you have always yearned for.

Third – The Hard Tomorrow

Publisher – Drawn & Quarterly

Kiara, who offers online assignment help Sydneysays that if there’s one book that’s in sync with the world today, then it is The Hard Tomorrow by Eleanor Davis’. The book is heart-breaking and ambitious all the way, where the author writes with the hope of a better world. It revolves around a political activist and a caregiver. In the book, you’ll find instances where you can see how blurry the line is between the political and the personal events is, and how this thin line puts all the relationships at a risk. Honestly, it is an emotionally draining book yet one of the kindest books I have read so far. The best thing about The Hard Tomorrow is that it is a much-needed break from the earlier work by Eleanor. For me, it is the book of the year and for all the right reasons.

Fourth – Is This How You See Me?

Publisher –  Fantagraphics Books

Just as we discussed above, if ‘Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me’ is the perfect book for our hidden high schooler, ‘Is This How You See Me?’, is the book from the age spectrum’s entirely opposite end. This book by Jaime Hernandez puts forth the story of Hopey and Maggie, who decide on revisiting their youth. So, from the middle age, they go back to the young days by attending a punk reunion show. Amidst the show, they realize how much has changed, and yet there are a few things that never change. After reading this book, it is pretty clear that Jaime’s work has matured to sensitivity and subtlety that the book is well able to hit you with the nostalgia of lost youth and leave you with a melancholic smile on the face. Lily, who offers the best online digital marketing courses online, says that for her, Jaime has always been the number 1 living cartoonist, and after reading the book, her thoughts for him have not changed even one bit.

So, these, according to us, are the top 4 best comics of 2019. You should take out some time and give them a good read. You will thank us later! If you have more to add to the list, leave your suggestions in the comments below.

AfterShock Comics Statement on COVID-19

Tue, 03/17/2020 - 18:32

Dear Industry Press and Colleagues,

On behalf of all of us at AfterShock Comics, we want to let you know that we take the health of our fans, colleagues, creators, and retail partners very seriously – no matter where in the world they happen to find themselves at this unprecedented time.

Beyond continued good health and supporting all the precautions that continue to be promoted at various community and government levels, if there’s anything we would wish for you and your friends and family right now is that you find yourself able to continue to support your local comic shop.

We’ve been impressed and somewhat comforted by the ways in which many shops across North America and around the world have already modified their businesses to ensure the ongoing safety of their employees, as well as to continue to serve you, the loyal AfterShock reader.

The vast majority of comic shops have already put into place plans to get through the current COVID-19 outbreak – and they want to make it as easy and safe as possible for you to get your comics. If you’re not feeling up to your regular visit, many shops can arrange for curbside pickup and can take payment over the phone. Some have modified their operating hours or staggered suggested peak times to visit in the interest of social distancing. Some even offer the opportunity to buy online and have your comics and collections delivered straight to your door (often with free or reduced shipping). Never underestimate the ingenuity of comics people!

As for us, we’re working as doggedly as ever to bring you the caliber of escapist fare that you expect from AfterShock.

It’s been said that a situation like this, in which more and more people are being prompted (or in some cases, required) to stay at home, is a perfect opportunity to catch up on one’s reading. We couldn’t agree more.

Stay healthy. Stay safe. Stay AfterShock.

RICH REVIEWS: Stingray # 1

Tue, 03/17/2020 - 03:19

Title: Stingray # 1
Publisher: Cutthroat Comics
Writer: Josh Nealis
Artist: Cristiano Reina
Cover: Matt Horak
Price: $ 4.99 US
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Comments: A guy in a costume rips into some thieves totally destroying them. It gets gory. He does look good and is bad ass and over the top violent.
What does a squirrel have to do with anything in this story? It looks amazing in the art but why is it there?
The story jumps around way to much. It needs to stop and let you know what is going on. Who are the characters it is showing you and what are they up to and why.
The squirrel gets to fight an alien on an alien planet.
The story needs to be more focused. There is to much happening with no reason given for any of it. Who are the Ceti why are they doing what they do? Who is the violent guy? What is the violent guy with no name doing in another guys bedroom? Who is the other guy? How does he fit into the story?
The art does look amazing. The squirrel you will just love how it looks.

Mon, 03/16/2020 - 20:56

(New Bedford, MA/USA—March 16, 2020) The 12th annual 2020 Inkwell Awards, the only national celebration for the art of comic-book inking, will be postponed until September 4 along with its host show, the Great Philadelphia Comic Con!, in Oaks, PA. Voting results and the awards ceremony from the non-profit advocacy will all take place at that time, due to the host show postponement from the recent COVID-19 situation.

Bob Almond, the Inkwells’ founder/director and MC of the event, said, “We know comic-book fans and professionals alike look forward to the results each year, as do the show’s attendees, and we’re sorry to disappoint them. But because CEO and Promoter Christopher Wertz and Director of Artists Alley & Creator Relations Stan Kanopka originally, and Jason Thomsen currently, have been so helpful to us in becoming our new host show, we feel obligated to save everything for the con and the loyal fans who attend.”

Almond said that as the date gets closer and guests and presenters are secured, further announcements will be made on the Inkwell’s website and other media. “Everything is up in the air due to the current crisis, which is understandable.” he added. “We just want everyone to focus on staying safe and healthy until it dissipates. Then we can hopefully get back to normal and celebrate the vital work that ink artists contribute to the industry.”

The Inkwells have five categories: Favorite Inker, Most-Adaptable Inker, the “Props” award for under-recognized professionals, the S.P.A.M.I. (Small Press And Mainstream-Independent), and the “All-in-One” Award for the artist who inks his/her own pencil art. There are also two lifetime achievement awards, the Joe Sinnott Hall Of Fame and the Stacey Aragon Special Recognition Award, or SASRA. All winners will be announced at the Philly show in September.

The Inkwell Awards is the only official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and educate regarding the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize the best ink artists and their work. Established in 2008, the Inkwells are overseen by a volunteer committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame.
