Do I recommend A Wizard of Earthsea? Yes. Here's a fun game for you: after reading it, keeping in mind that it's a YA novel, read the first chapter of anything written in the last ten years.

Hyperion read; The Fall of Hyperion finished. Published in '89 and '90, respectively. Within ten years of William Gibson's "Burning Chrome" (1982) and Neuromancer (1984). It shows.
