This is the old HMW FAQ modified from the yahoogroup, which is still well worth checking out. I totally forgot I converted The Wizard's Amulet and Lost Islands of Castanimir to HM4e. See
http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/hmw/info Conversations and Files.
Anyhow the FAQ below is dated, but relevant enough IMO. I removed many of the old links that broke the writing up a bit since some are dead and others just don't matter anymore.

Hackmaster 4e was an RPG from Kenzer & Company based on Advanced Dungeons & Dragons by Gary Gygax and was on license from Wizards Of The Coast.
Now while the origins of the game are from AD&D, the game itself is actually based off of the comic strip “Knights of The Dinner table” that spoofed AD&D and it's fans.
HackMaster World (HMW) originated on
Yahoogroups as an alternate voice for HackMaster. This is the place for new ideas. Some of the mainstream 'sanctioned only' people get very upset at anyone personalizing Hackmaster. This is not a place for fanatical fanboys to ambush anyone who has criticism for HM or Kenzer & Co. This is a place for healthy discussion.
HMW is a where you can pull up an easy chair and relax. Talk about HM in the gaming world, it's origins in AD&D; new races, classes, and other homebrew rules! This is an open forum to speak about HM and old-guard gaming in general (OSRIC, Castles & Crusades, etc.).
No direct flaming, accusing each other, or using debating tactics to belittle others. Discuss, disagree, inform, and enjoy! HM is a game and should be fun as should HMW.
As well, players, fans, and other interested parties from around the world are very welcome here. Like any good game, it should be available to everyone, and they all should have a place to have their say. We hope that place will be HMW.
This is also a place to post helpful files, links, and take part in polls. This is a community, and if you're part of it, it's your community too and we can outlive the 'company.' Do not hesitate to offer constructive suggestions for the group and it's future. We're here to build and grow, but mostly to enjoy.
If you're interested in mainstream HackMaster discussion including their new 5e project and other Kenzer games go
here.
What is HackMaster?
(this is not an unbiased review)
Hackmaster 4th edition is the first real world edition of Hackmaster in print and for sale in the gaming market. It claims to be what the next edition of AD&D should have been. HM takes AD&D 1e and mixes AD&D 2e with it and adds many bells, whistles, clarifications, and fleshing out of AD&D.
HM has many tables, rules, and more tables. It's a spoof on AD&D and especially on the rules lawyer. Certainly the system is fully playable and quite fun. The core books are the Player's Handbook, Game Master's Guide, 8 Hacklopedia of Beasts books, and the Monster Matrix (There is also a Field Manual that could be used in place of the HOBs). Beyond the core books there are also the Thief, Fighter, Cleric, and Magic User Handbooks. Of course there is a Game master's Shield and a Combat Wheel. Now there is even a book just for the Pixie-Fairie race. There are many adventures and other materials for HM as well. Most of the adventures are conversions of classic AD&D modules but there are a few original works sneaking through!
HM may have been the first of many products now on the go bringing back old-guard or old-school material to the forefront of gaming. With the expiration of the license a 5th edition is expected likely based on the Aces & Eights system and set in the Kingdoms of Kalamar.
