Moot at this point. Those three yards of "soil"? Expensive dirt. Planted onions, lettuce, and some other cool weather crops. None of them developed true leaves. After a month and two liquid fertilizer feedings, when still nothing grew true leaves, I hoed everything under and raked in some slow release fertilizer. Then a month later I added another round. When I get around to it I'll try getting some summer crops in and see what happens.
As for the thinning directions, I checked the instructions for every onion seed packet I have, which come from four different companies, and they all say to thin to three inches, even the monsters that would end up growing into each other at only three inches apart. I'm beginning to suspect that I'm not the only one who doesn't "get" this gardening thing.
