[P&R] Goddamn Internet
#1
Ok. So Mike Nystal is in bad shape and Eric Tenkar takes issue with that. Well, not with Mike's stroke but with a fundraiser that Ultima Con has picked up on because Mike's scheduled to appear there. "Let's get him in better financial straights so he can make an appearance at our con."

Eric has an issue with that. I don't. Don't much care. My issue isn't even that the phrase is "financial straits," not "financial straights." No, my issue is that I can't leave a comment to let them know that they're looking like a bunch of semi-literate morons. Why not? Because you cannot comment unless you have an account with google, livejournal, wordpress, typepad, openid, or aim. As Eric so succinctly put it toward the end of his blog, "Fuck that shit."

Now, there are so many politically charged directions I could go from here, but I'll just leave it with if big data wants to make money off my browsing habits, give me my cut.

The good ol' days when they did actually pay us to browse the Internet. You could actually make a meagre living doing just that.

I cannot say, but that was the impression I got reading the comments.

Bah, when I was laid up for 6 months and then spent the next couple years doing physio, it's not like an benevolent fund came my way. Then again, I don't pay for medical bills, but I am self employed so not being able to work hurt.

I did have friendly neighbours who cleared my driveway of snow, cleaned my gutters and dropped off food. I had a few PSWs for a time and they were great.

I remember right after I was out and about again, seeing this big community drive to help someone who was sick and give them money. I couldn't help but be a little indignant. It's the price I pay for essentially being a hermit. The community does rally around people. I'm just so private.
