I never got that. "We're not a joke system!" was what I always heard/read.
Quote:I didn't realize that Kenzer poked the bear with copyright issuesKenzer didn't poke the bear. Kenzer was the bear. The man is an IP Lawyer. So when he contacted WotC to tell them that they didn't have the reprint rights to the KoDT, he was doing that officially as a lawyer with the contracts to back him up. When Jolly first started doing the strips for Dragon, back before joining Kenzer&Co, he specifically set up the contract that Dragon only had first printing/publishing rights. WotC included the strips in the Dragon Archives anyway, possibly thinking that they, being the 600 lb. gorilla, could do whatever they wanted. They were wrong. Many people had WotC over a barrel with the Archives debacle, but Kenzer was the guy who was able to leverage a license as part of the settlement. (If you get a chance, have Dave talk about the negotiations. "They kept trying to fit trademark law into copyright issues.")
Quote:I still use the HackMaster Smartass Smackdown table. And that's parody. Also parody: a d10000 Critical Hit table, eight Monster Manuals, and Fireball spells for every spell level. I did a bit of that myself in ə-OH with polearms. Saying that a Lucerne Hammer is a Crunchy weapon is a joke (it's actually Stabby); listing 59 polearms and giving them all the same stats is parody.
