Ə - A Treatise(‽) on Magic Items

There are three types of magical items in Ə (so far). We've seen complementary magic items like Wands and Staves that provide their power in conjunction with spell casting, or magic weapons that provide a boost to combat. We've also seen innate magic items where their power is either always "on", such as Boots of Joyous Comfort, or activated, such as the Potion of Tasty Numminess which must be consumed to receive any benefit.

The third type is powered magic items, where the user needs to provide magical power (roll the Sorcerer die) to access the item's, uh, power. (Don't you hate it when your lexicon is larger than your vocabulary?) A limited example is the magic scroll. Unlike a magical scroll, where the amount of magic that is put into the casting is only of concern to determine if the spell is triggered, most powered magic items depend on Degree of Success, like magical spells. (Although, it could be argued that casting a spell from a scroll isn't an act of providing magical energy but is instead a check on the character's ability to read the scriber's handwriting, much like a nurse needs to be able to decipher a doctor's illegible chicken scratch.) Also unlike scrolls, most magic items aren't consumed by the magical energies used to form the magical effect. In general, powered magic items are usable by anyone, but items requiring a minimum Sorcerer Rank are not unknown (even if I haven't thought of any, yet).

When attempting to use a powered magic item, roll the current Sorcerer die for casting spells after all penalties have been factored. Example: Rifkip is 7th Rank in Sorcerer (d12), but has failed two spellcasting attempts (-2 penalty). He would use a d8 to cast spells and use powered magic items.

However, failing an attempt to use a powered magic item will not trigger a -1 penalty.

Do we look to the user or to the item for caster level when using a powered item? And can chain-casting be used? Using scrolls as an example, Ə, page 18 reads: "Scrolls are a means by which a character can cast spells he otherwise wouldn't be able to cast to a degree he would be unlikely to achieve otherwise." And, "Scrolls . . . cannot be Chain Cast."

New Rule: The caster level for scrolls (and powered magic items) is the level of the scroll's creator, not the scroll's user.

As for chain-casting, the above statement seems very unambiguous, and so it is - for scrolls. For powered magic items, it depends. If it's a personal item, like a ring or brooch, then no, chain-casting cannot be used. If the item is a stand-alone item, let's say a portable gate, then maybe.

(Great. Now I need to write up a Portable Gate.)

So what about a powered item that requires a specific number of casters to perform it's magic which in my opinion should kill at least one of them ;) You know, summon a powerful creature, leader is the first one eaten. The rest end up insane.

Thirteen would, of course, be the number. Not the type of campaign I'd write, though.
