Monty Haul's Lesser Tower of Doom I1

I1 for Incursion

I don't really want to give any spoilers for the adventure, but needless to say, I felt pretty good about mapping out an area that did not remain constant.

So, if you read my entry about One True RPG, you'd know we were preparing to play Monty Haul's Lesser Tower of Doom. Swords & Wizardry Complete was chosen as the system and we played it pretty much by the book. I made up four characters. There was the Dwarf Fighter/Thief, the Elf Fighter/Magic-User/Thief, the Human Cleric, and the Human Paladin. None of them had overly exceptional attributes and the only really low numbers were generally Wisdom. The system itself doesn't place a lot of stock in the actual attribute value but puts the onus on the player to be prudent.

I took with me a torchbearer, porter, and two minor mercenaries (weak men at arms). Just before we started, my lovely GM altered my hit points to be max for all four 1st level characters. S&W being weaker than OSRIC at 1st level, this likely saved our bacon.

I did some reconnaissance, made my ingress, and moved extremely cautiously using my own method of dungeon navigation. We lost the torchbearer and the characters still hear his screams but we avenged him. Later, I tried an ambush and it didn't go my way, but plan B resolved it. Merc 2 was knocked unconscious and the Cleric was almost down. Most of the session was me mapping and moving about, but there were at least three combats and we retreated to safety so the adventure could pause until the next session.

My new GM did very well. She has some things to learn, but I've been plying my hand at GMing for about 30 years or so and still have much to learn myself. At times she may have explained things I might not normally have known but they caused no harm and many experienced GMs do this (I'm just not one). She was well versed in the adventure and quickly seemed comfortable winging things with the system. I also made some errors in stocking my equipment pools as I did not have enough ranged weapons.

We ran this without a tactical map which was fun and loose however it also caused me to be very specific about what was being described. Personally, I think that helped both of us get into the adventure.

One of the issues we had that took some time was me rambling on about the history of gaming and the purpose of certain mechanics because it interests me a lot and I try to share what knowledge I have while trying to spark discussion. I want to help her find her own feel for ruling the game but often get lost in cogitation and I fear that others just hear "blah-blah." :) Regardless, I'm very proud of her and how she ran it.

It was a lot of fun and I'm glad she got this session under her belt. I look forward to the next incursion into this so-called "Lesser Tower of Doom."
