RICH INTERVIEWS: Bill Morrison Writer/Artist for The Beatles Yellow Submarine

Wed, 09/05/2018 - 19:55

First Comics News: Were you a fan of the Beatles before making “The Beatles Yellow Submarine”?

Bill Morrison: Yes, I’ve been a Beatles fan since I was five years old. The first record I ever owned was a Beatles album of sorts. It was “Alvin and the Chipmunks Sing The Beatles’ Hits” My older brother and two older sisters had real Beatles albums though, so we always had their music playing in our house.

I also remember seeing them live on TV on the Ed Sullivan Show.

1st: What most stands out for you in “The Beatles Yellow Submarine”?

Bill: I think the designs of Heinz Edelman are incredible. Other feature animated films of the time either had the Disney style or they were stop motion clay animation. What Edelman brought to the film was something completely original and it perfectly captured the feel of the Beatles music.

Rich: When drawing the Beatles how did you manage to achieve such great likenesses of each one?

Bill: All I did was follow the designs established by Edelman in the film. I’ve always had a fairly easy time of drawing animated characters “on model”, as long as I have plenty of good reference such as model sheets and screenshots.

1st: What genre would you say “The Beatles Yellow Submarine” is?

Bill: I would describe it as a musical fantasy.

Rich: How would you describe Fred?

Bill: Fred is sort of the Gandalf of the story. He leads the band on their quest and guides them with his knowledge and wisdom. He’s not necessarily as capable Gandalf, but he has his moments.

Rich: What makes a Blue Meanie a Blue Meanie at the start of this comic book?

Bill: They’re defined by their hatred of music and beauty. There are the actual Blue Meanies, and then there are their troops, the Apple Bonkers, the Countdown Clowns, Jack the Nipper, etc., and their ultimate goal is to eradicate all music and beauty in Pepperland.

1st: Do you think our society could ever adopt the ideals of Pepperland?

Bill: No, I think Pepperland is portrayed as a heaven on Earth, and I don’t think that’s really possible. We’ll always have elements of evil and hate in our society that prevent us from having a real utopia. But I do think it’s a goal to work toward. It would be great to get closer to a Pepperland than we are now.

1st: How has your career progressed at Bongo Comics?

Bill: My time at Bongo was a wonderful period in my career. I’m very proud of the comics we put out and I know the experience of being Creative Director there really prepared me for my current job.

1st: What is going on with “Roswell, Little Green Man”?

Bill: I haven’t drawn Roswell in several years. I had to put it down when I took on the Art Director position on Futurama. I was also doing my regular Bongo job at the same time, and I just didn’t have time to do all three. Over the years I’ve wanted to revive it, but it just hasn’t happened. Maybe after I retire from MAD I’ll start it up again.

Rich: What do you have planned next in your career?

Bill: I hope to be editing MAD for the next several years.

1st: What would you do if you had the Radioactive Man’s powers?

Bill: Use them to hang out with Batman.

1st: Any parting words for all the fans of your work?

Bill: I hope they’ll pick up the Yellow Submarine graphic novel. It’s been my dream over the past twenty years, and I’m thrilled that it’s finally published. I think fans of my work will really dig it!

RICH INTERVIEWS: Elena Kampouris Actress for Sacred Lies

Wed, 09/05/2018 - 19:52

First Comics News: How did you make your start as an actress?

Elena Kampouris: I fell in love with the arts growing up largely because of the environment I was raised in! My parents are both artists, however not in the film business but in fine art and fashion illustration. Creativity was fortunately fostered, nurtured and encouraged. I never did any type of acting or theater when I was little nor through my schooling, it was a spontaneous curiosity around the age of 14 where I got my first little bit part in Gossip Girl, and as people say the rest was history!

1st: How would you describe Minnow Bly’s character?

Elena: Minnow is a fighter, a survivor. She’s an old soul who is strong-willed but also vulnerable, at the same time she is dangerous and capable of violence. She is not one thing, she’s flawed and complex. She deals with whatever’s dealt to her and doesn’t let any of her trials define or victimize her. She’s constantly questioning everything. She’s also learning to cope with entering the real world from being brainwashed and brought up in a racist cult. She’s learning to live without hands and coping with the trauma of having her hands chopped off in a barbaric way. She’s finally getting to decide what she believes and who she is, without anyone else telling her what to do.

1st: How was it playing a character with no hands? What went into this?

Elena: A lot went into it! Prosthetics of Minnows stumps were made out of molds of my own arms which I learned to puppeteer. They were carefully painted and fitted by our superb FX team. It’s an immense responsibility for me to portray an amputee and it would be disrespectful to even imagine what that could possibly be like to experience, so in preparing for the role I was fortunate enough to meet Kristie Sita, an incredible dancer my age who lost her hand in a boating accident around Minnows age. We worked together every day for 3 weeks before shooting started. She was kind enough to let me into her personal pain and journey, so I could accurately understand Minnow’s physical challenges and emotional challenges. She was my rock through the experience, helping me learn to be comfortable with the prosthetic rigs and performing all of Minnow’s physical actions. We literally went through every single scene in the script, looking at how we were going to tackle it, and determined what prosthetic rig would work best for whatever action. She meticulously supervised me on set making sure that everything looked natural. It was so important to have her be a part of this is hopefully giving Minnow the most honest voice possible. I hope I could do it justice for Minnows voice, Kristie’s and other amputees. We’ve remained close friends since we’re like sisters.

Rich: You seem to put a lot into the role of Minnow Bly. Do you at all sympathize with her troubles?

Elena: 100%. This is a girl who’s experienced severe trauma, yet she’s strong and has a thread of endurance in her. What I love about our series and its message is that there’s something in here for everyone to connect with. We don’t have to have experienced exactly what Minnow went through, but we have all endured some kind of struggle or grief. We are always searching for answers as human beings, searching for happiness, We can all to relate to feeling imprisoned or trapped or like we don’t belong. Minnow is looking for the answers to life and how to deal with pain and torture because life is hard. However, at the end of the day, it’s within ourselves that we can decide who are and what we believe.

1st: What about this role is most enjoyable to you?

Elena: There were a number of enjoyable things to this role and this series that are so unique and rare to find. Our crew was made up of so many remarkable people. They are the unsung heroes who rarely get praise for putting together such complex projects. We had a slew of exceptional cameramen, a stellar wardrobe department that went above and beyond, a lovely hair and makeup team, a kick-butt stunt coordinator who is basically Lara Croft 5.0 (and my first time being on a set with a female stunt leader) they all had such passion for making this show happen. The cast and I didn’t shave or wear makeup since we are set in juvie and the forest. We were encouraged to embrace going natural which was empowering and unifying (not to mention not shaving made for quicker showers!) Altogether, we made something that’s never been seen before and very meaningful. This is a scripted show about a female protagonist with a physical disability in juvie. We handle topics like religion and racism and what it means to be a survivor. This is female driven, diverse and also happens to be a fairy tale. It’s inspiring the most wonderful conversations on Facebook but unfortunately, it’s basically being overlooked by mainstream press. It will break my heart if this show doesn’t find an audience. But I’m grateful First Comic News wants to talk about it.

1st: If you were not in the part of Minnow which role would you like to do in “Sacred Lies”?

Elena:
Dr. Wilson. He’s so troubled and conflicted, he knows right from wrong and tries so hard to do the right thing even though it comes at a great cost. Krystal is also a very fascinating character to me, which I would’ve liked to have seen explored deeper. And with that said, all the juvie girl roles are compelling, their backstories were limited in how much they were explored due to time restrictions of the show. What I find beautiful though is that these girls all have many different beliefs and come from different walks of life but they are still in the same spot, with the same struggles and the same wishes.

Rich: What was your favorite moment on the set of “Sacred Lies”?

Elena: Definitely shooting the ending to episode 7, the *bleep* scene. We are all screaming curse words at the top of our lungs and it’s bleeped out as a way of commenting on the censorship and muzzling of girl’s voices and their anger. Our incredible writers wanted to creatively embrace the bleeping and what it means. It was so cathartic for me in a personal way and felt wonderfully liberating (even though we all lost our voices afterward, you may notice in some scenes my voice is off a few octaves!)

1st: You played Paris Miller in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” was this a challenging role?

Elena: I’d have to say it was fairly easy since Paris and I both have our own outrageous, lovable and eccentric Greek families. It’s so special to myself and I think so many people because the movies really represented not just the craziness and charm of Greek families but all families! It’s awesome to now to be a Portokalos for life. But as challenging roles go, Minnow was one of the toughest.

1st: How does Broadway compare to a TV role?

Elena: Playing Cecile de Volanges in the Broadway production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses was my first foray into theater, I had never stepped on a stage before and it was a real eye-opening experience having only done film before. It’s night and day. Theater is a magical medium, every performance is special between performer and audience, it’s not filmed and will never be done the same way so it’s a unique experience intimately shared. Nothing can be artificially edited or manipulated and you only get one go at it per show versus a plethora of takes for film. It was the ultimate boot camp for me and taught me how to be disciplined, show up one hundred percent prepared and be a team player.

1st: What type of role do you most like to portray on screen?

Elena: I like to play characters that have depth and complexity. I like challenging myself and discovering more about the human psyche. We are all so similar yet so different at the same time. And one of my favorite cinematic quotes of all time happens to be from the first Greek Wedding film “I’m an orange, you’re an apple. But after all, we’re all fruit!” Classic.

Rich: How much does physical fitness play a part in your life?

Elena: Physical fitness is extremely important in multiple ways to me. When I did theater for the for the first time ever on Broadway’s Liaisons, I realized how much fitness helps with endurance. People don’t realize how much stamina is required mentally and physically to keep up!

Rich: What are your other hobbies/interests outside of acting?

Elena: If not spending time with my pudgy bulldog Petunia I like to read, workout, study Shakespeare, poetry and Haruki Murakami on my down time. I’m also a huge Sinophile, I’m fluent in Mandarin and love traditional Chinese ballet and Asian arts. I am proficient in ASL American Sign Language, through my love of dance and music I find it the best way to learn a new language!

1st: How do your family and friends feel about your acting?

Elena: They are extremely supportive, I would not have been able to do any of this without their support and my family’s sacrifice. I’m fortunate to have people around me that I trust and care about me and I care about them.

1st: How do you feel about all your fans?

Elena: They are the reason that I have a career! Without fans, I have nothing so they are #1 and will always be #1.

RICH REVIEWS: Forbidden Gallery # 3

Wed, 09/05/2018 - 19:33

Title: Forbidden Gallery # 3
Publisher: ACP Comics
Cover & Frontis: Daerick Gross Sr
Back covers art Steven Butler and colors, William Mull
Writers: various
Artists: various
Price: $ 3.99 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Website: www.acpcomics.com
Comments: “China Bull” Story & letters William Mull, art Aileen Oracion and colors Omi Remalante.
Two guys fight over a girl. The art is plain. The expressions overdone. There is no real story here. No point to this.
“Scattercrow: Night of the Long Talons” Story William Mull, art Karl Comendador and colors & letters Daerick Gross Sr.
We see the birth of Scattercrow. Scattercrow needs more explanation as to what he is. The idea of a supernatural being dispensing justice is well known and the crows are not new. Still, the way it is presented is well enough done to keep it interesting. We do get to see a bit of terror build and the art creates a nice menacing atmosphere.
“The Vampire’s Wand!” Story Nicola Cuti and art & letters Nik Poliwko.
A magic wand gets used as a weapon when its magic is gone. Yes even without magic a magic wand is a dangerous thing. The turn of the century setting is nicely illustrated.
“Turnabout” Story Roger McKenzie, art Dan Day, colors Daerick Gross Sr and letters William Mull.
Well getting your revenge can be sweet just be careful what you do does not come back at you. The art fits the story nicely.
“Necronauts” Story Ed DeVore, concept Von Grimm, pencils Portaveritas, inks Jeff Austin, letters William Mull and Pin-up colors Jose Villarrubia.
A nicely told story with great art. It is about leaving well enough alone and not going where you know you should not tread.
All the pin-up covers for each story are works of art. They are a feast for your eyes.
The back cover pin-up and page before it are so beautifully illustrated. They bring across a terror and horror rarely seen in comic book form.

Silver Screen Bottling Company Launches Ten-Forward Vodka

Wed, 09/05/2018 - 15:46

At the end of a long day of going boldly into the unknown, the crew of the legendary Starship Enterprise-D often relaxed in the ship’s beautiful Ten-Forward Lounge.

It was there, in what many considered to be the true heart of the ship, that off-duty crew members often gathered to socialize, to share a meal, or to enjoy an after-hours drink. Ten-Forward also saw diplomatic receptions, concerts, and even some epic three-dimensional chess battles. Situated on Deck Ten on the forward edge of the ship’s primary hull, the crew’s favorite gathering place featured large windows offering a spectacular view of the infinite cosmos beyond.

Although most Enterprise crew members were career Starfleet officers, Ten-Forward’s bartender was a civilian named Guinan, a long-time friend of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Guinan, an El-Aurian, was famed for her almost-mystical ability to understand anyone’s feelings from even the most casual conversation, making her ideally suited to select the perfect beverage for each person on nearly every occasion. Guinan was able to choose from Ten-Forward’s interstellar array of selections from around the galaxy, ranging from synthehol to such exotic offerings as a Zartak aperitif, a Samarian Sunrise, and even prune juice, which security chief Worf solemnly proclaimed to be a “warrior’s drink.” And, of course, Ten-Forwardalso provided a classic selection of some of Earth’s finest spirits.

Celebrating the bold spirit of exploration embodied by the Enterpriseand its crew, Ten-Forward Vodka is made from choice American Grain, carefully distilled 6 times, and delivered via terrestrial and interstellar transport for the enjoyment of discerning adventurers on planet Earth, aboard the Starship Enterprise-D, and across the galaxy.

Go boldly, drink responsibly.

To honor the Star Trek legacy, Ten-Forward Vodka traveled into space before being blended into the stocks of the premium spirit, insuring that a portion of every bottle will contain vodka that has explored space. Distilled six times from American grain, and filtered through hardwood charcoal, Ten-Forward Vodka is soft and delicate enough to drink straight or mixed into your favorite cocktail. Expertly crafted in small batches, Ten-Forward Vodka is for the Star Trek fan and the vodka aficionado alike.

Silver Screen Bottling Company Launches James T. Kirk Straight Bourbon

Wed, 09/05/2018 - 15:46

Among Starfleet’s legendary space explorers, it is Admiral James T. Kirk who most embodies the spirit of bold adventure.

Born in the great state of Iowa on planet Earth in 2233, Kirk spent part of his youth on planet Tarsus IV, where he narrowly escaped death at the hand of the infamous Kodos the Executioner. Admitted to Starfleet Academy in 2250, Kirk was the only cadet to beat the infamous “Kobayashi Maru” test of character. As an ensign, he served on the Starship Republic, and his first posting after graduation in 2254 was aboard the U.S.S. Farragut.

James Kirk took command of the Starship Enterprise in 2264 on a five-year voyage of deep-space exploration that made him a legend. During that time, he led one of the first missions beyond our galaxy, he averted a new war with the Romulan Empire, and he literally saved Earth history by going back in time to undo a temporal accident.

Intensely loyal to his crew, Kirk did not hesitate to risk his career to rescue Spock, his first officer and friend, who was believed dead on the Genesis Planet. In one of Kirk’s most celebrated missions, he defied Starfleet Command to commandeer a stolen Klingon ship to prevent an ecological catastrophe from devastating his home world. Kirk entered a temporal anomaly in 2293 while helping to save the Starship Enterprise-B on its maiden voyage. He emerged in the year 2371, where he was killed while protecting the inhabitants of the Veridian system. He is buried on a mountaintop on Veridian III.

Kirk explored strange, new worlds, led humanitarian missions, and brought peace to planets in conflict. He made first contact with new life and new civilizations, pushing outward the frontiers of knowledge as he explored boldly, where none had gone before. He represented humanity at its best, doing the things that humans do best.

James T. Kirk Straight Bourbon celebrates his bold spirit of adventure.

Silver Screen Bottling Company Launches Nuka Dark Rum

Wed, 09/05/2018 - 15:46

Nuka Dark™ Rum is a nod to the popular Nuka-Cola® soft drink in the iconic Fallout® video game series A

Sept. 5, 2018, Dallas, TX – Silver Screen Bottling Company and Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, have partnered to launch Nuka Dark Rum, a new spirit from the iconic Fallout video game franchise that will be sold exclusively online.

Nuka Dark Rum sells for $79.99 and is available for presale at www.NukaDarkRum.com. The bottles will begin shipping on November 14th, timed to the launch of Fallout® 76, which is the latest installment in the Fallout series.

The Nuka Dark Rum brand is a reference to Nuka-Cola, a line of fictional soft drinks in Bethesda’s immensely popular Fallout series, a massive open-world role-playing video game series set in a post-apocalyptic world. In the game, Nuka-Cola drinks are consumable beverages that have real-time status effects on the player.

Nuka Dark Rum shares the same look as bottles of the fictional Nuka-Cola, which are shaped like a rocket ship with four fins. They also feature a circular label similar to the label on Nuka-Cola packaging.

Expertly blended, Nuka Dark Rum is a classic tropical rum distilled with exacting standards. Soft on the pallet, the dark rum exhibits flavors of molasses and vanilla with a distinct note of coconut on the nose.

The extremely talented Gianluca Cerritelli has been a popular and frequent contributor to FEMFORCE for nearly two decades, having first appeared in Femforce ‘way back in issue #119. Up to this point, he’s won acclaim among FF fans strictly as a penciler, but FF #185 brings the full flower of his creative range to the fore in a 26-page Ms. VICTORY opus that Gianluca will be writing AND inking in addition to penciling. Set during the dark days of World War II, this never-previously-told story out of the past takes a slightly different tack than the usual Femforce tale, as we see how motivations and events in Joan (Ms./Miss Victory)Wayne’s life lead to actions that affect geopolitical events. Then, an extra-long” TOO TALL” TARA adventure highlights her passion for conservation and environmental issues as an effort to curtail South African wildlife poaching brings TARA into contact with a giant reptile out of another age. When the anomalous creature is actually found to be part of a sinister international fraud scheme, the jolly “green” giant girl has no choice but to lower the boom! Plus, continuing developments in the master plan of The STRONG HAND, more information revealed about the mysterious BLITZFRAU; solo stories starring SHE-CAT, STARDUST and SYNN, and the latest chapter in the ongoing serial, The NEW Adventures of NYOKA, The Jungle Girl!! That’s all to be found in FEMFORCE #185; 80 pages of great action and adventure inside of full-color covers, coming in January, 2019- for $9.95 from AC Comics!!
