Now on Kickstarter: Animation Veteran Stephan Franck’s Graphic Novel Caper About The Search for Dracula’s Lost Treasure

Tue, 05/29/2018 - 20:13

The Russ Manning Award-nominated SILVER Graphic Novel Series Concludes

The Fourth and Final Volume of Stephan Franck’s Graphic Novel Caper About

The Search for Dracula’s Lost Treasure is Now on Kickstarter

May 29, 2018) Stephan Franck has worked on some of the most beloved animated films of all time, including The Iron Giant, How to Train Your Dragon and Despicable Me —and his passion for storytelling extends from the silver screen to comic books and graphic novels. Over the course of the last four years, Franck has been writing, illustrating and self publishing SILVER, a globe-trotting graphic novel series that mashes up the world of Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula with action, adventure, humor, pulp storytelling and modern sensibilities. Told over the course of 4 volumes (and a stand alone novella), Franck has created an unforgettable cast and a compelling caper that picks up 30 years after Professor Abraham Van Helsing visited Dracula’s castle. Now Van Helsing’s descendent, the mysterious vampire hunter Rosalyn, is teaming up with a ragtag group of con men for a high stakes heist to rob Europe’s richest vampires. Will they succeed, and live off their take from this one last job? All will be revealed in the fourth and final volume of SILVER, which Franck and his company Dark Planet Comics are funding via a Kickstarter campaign.

In SILVER, a group of criminals discover the late Jonathan Harker’s secret ledger, which discloses the existence of an exotic treasure of silver hidden in Dracula’s castle. Finnigan, the group’s leader, knows a retirement plan when he sees it, so he’s willing to do whatever it takes to pull off the biggest heist of the last ten centuries—even if that means allying himself with the mysterious, sword-wielding vampire hunter Sledge, aka Rosalind Van Helsing.

This year, Dark Planet Comics released a Free Comic Book Day Edition of the first issue of SILVER. “My hope is that fans who love old-fashioned storytelling that’s chock full of action and adventure, mystery and humor, discover SILVER in time to be a part of the epic finale.” The series has already attracted the notice of comic book creators including Tim Sale, Bill Sienkiewicz and Jim Lee, and has been widely praised with coverage from an array of outlets including NPR, THE NERDIST, HORROR NEWS NETWORK, NEWSARAMA and COMICON.

Fans who back the new Kickstarter can get digital editions, all four trade paperbacks individually, a signed slipcase featuring forall four trade paperbacks, the acclaimed novella ROSALYND, an audiobook of ROSALYND and limited edition prints by or done in collaboration with three incredible artists: Marvel comics and Kickstarter sensation Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms.Marvel, Spiderman, Code Monkey Saves World), animator and bandes dessinées artist Rodolphe Guenoden (Kung Fu Panda, Ma Reverence), and superstar illustrator Mel Milton.

When he’s not writing and drawing comics, Franck is an Executive Producer and the Head of Story for the PLAYMOBIL Movie for Lionsgate. Previously, he worked as a supervising animator on the cult classic film THE IRON GIANT and as a key story contributor to DESPICABLE ME. Franck also co-created the award-winning animated TV Series CORNEIL & BERNIE (Nicktoons, Hub Network), and received an Annie Award nomination for Best Director in a TV Program, for the special SMURFS: THE LEGEND OF SMURFY HOLLOW.

If funded through Kickstarter, pledges will be delivered to backers this fall. The SILVER Volume 4  campaign is live as of May 22nd and runs for 30 days.

For updates, follow Dark Planet Comics on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

This is what people are saying about Stephan Franck’s SILVER:

“Writer/artist Stephan Franck is firing on all cylinders…. Stylish black-and-white art, and a smart, charmingly roguish point-of-view-character draw you in.” — NPR

“With SILVER, Stephan Franck shows how much excitement can be packed into a fast-moving, thrill-filled story… a really, really fun ride.”—Tim Sale (Batman: The Long Halloween)

“SILVER is so big, bold, and juicy! I absolutely love this book!” — Bill Sienkiewicz (Elektra: Assassin)

“Spun out of Bram Stoker’s literary classic Dracula, SILVER retains the original novel intact at its core, while extending its world in every possible direction.” — HORROR NEWS NETWORK

“Great book!”—Jim Lee (Batman)

“A beautifully drawn and masterfully told noir/heist story with a teasing side of the supernatural that constantly kept me surprised”—Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel)

“Franck knows his customers, what they expect, and he gives it to them in spades.”—AIN’T IT COOL NEWS

“SILVER has all of the elements you crave and with a story that you’ll simply devour.”—David Gallaher (High Moon)

“May be the ultimate gothic noir comic saga.”—COMICON

“Impressive. A Mignola-esque reshuffling of history with a fanciful legerdemain that keeps the story light on its toes.—Samuel Sattin (Legend)

“You’ve seen adaptations and re-imaginings of author Bram Stoker’s seminal work Dracula, but never quite like this. Writer and artist Stephan Franck has taken the Dracula mythos and the foundation that Stoker built to create a unique yarn of horror and heist in his story Silver. The conceit sees an Ocean’s 11-esque caper that has con men and women eyeing the ultimate score: treasure from Dracula’s castle.”—FREAK SUGAR

“There may not be a better original vampire comic book in America than SILVER.”—COMIC BOOK BIN

Creators of WWII spy thriller explore the death—and near resurgence—of Hitler in timely graphic novel SON OF HITLER

Tue, 05/29/2018 - 19:45

PORTLAND, OR, 05/29/2018 — Image Comics is pleased to reveal preview pages from the “controversial” graphic novel SON OF HITLER, which will hit shelves this June. The alternative history story, written by acclaimed creators Anthony Del Col and Geoff Moore with art by New York Times bestselling cartoonist Jeff McComsey, explores a longstanding legend from the war with a twist that chillingly echoes today’s hostile American politics.

In the darkest days of World War II, SON OF HITLER follows a rogue female spy handler who discovers a shocking secret—that when stationed in France during the first world war Adolf Hitler fathered an illegitimate child. She finds this young man in Occupied France and recruits him to get close to—and kill—his biological father and end the war. In the vein of The Man in the High Castle, Inglourious Basterds, and Zero Dark Thirty, the story’s creators were inspired by recent worldwide political events to craft a completely new ending.

“When Geoff, Jeff, and I first started working on this project, we wanted to tell a pulpy tale of a manipulative woman on a Nazi-hunting expedition that culminates in Hitler’s bunker,” said Del Col (Kill Shakespeare, Assassin’s Creed). “But as we witnessed unfortunate world events like the Charlottesville riots—combined shortly thereafter with the moment I witnessed someone on my neighborhood street wearing a Nazi swastika—I realized we had a duty to explore the roots of what’s happening today.”

Perhaps as a reflex of the recent rise of white supremacist groups in the news, stories of World War II and Nazism are growing in every medium, from film (Dunkirk, Darkest Hour) to video games (Call of Duty: WWII, the revived Wolfenstein franchise) and even television (The Man in the High Castle, the just-announced Jordan Peele project The Hunt). Canadians Del Col and Moore turned to indie stalwart McComsey (FUBAR, Flutter), who has done many stories and anthologies set during World War II and has created a book that feels like it’s from the era.

First announced at the prestigious ImageExpo in February, SON OF HITLER (ISBN: 978-1-5343-0224-2, Diamond Code: MAR180612) is an original graphic novel that will hit comic shops on Wednesday, June 20th and bookstores on Tuesday, June 26th. It can be pre-ordered on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, IndieBound, and Indigo.

PORTLAND, OR, 05/29/2018 — Bestselling writer Aleš Kot (ZERO, THE NEW WORLD), artist Danijel Žeželj (STARVE), and Eisner-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire (REDLANDS, PRETTY DEADLY) introduce readers to a near-future dystopian America in DAYS OF HATE: ACT ONE this July.

The United States of America, 2022: the loss that ripped two lovers apart drove one into the arms of the police state and the other toward a guerrilla war against white supremacy. This is the story of what happens when they meet again. A story of much more than just revenge.

A terrifyingly realistic dystopian tragedy—in the vein of The Americans and The Handmaid’s TaleThe Onion’s AV Club describes DAYS OF HATE as a “speculative fiction that doesn’t pull punches” and IGN calls it “a beautiful and haunting look at a very troubled world.”

RICH INTERVIEWS: Richard Dent Creator/Writer for Myopia

Tue, 05/29/2018 - 15:14

First Comics News: How did you end up creating “Myopia” where did the idea come from?

Richard Dent: I was always a huge fan of dystopian fiction and Myopia just sort of emerged from this passion. I didn’t really know what the story was going to be until I started writing.

1st: Can you give us a brief idea of the story in “Myopia”?

Richard: Myopia takes place two hundred years in the future in a society that has grown dependent on The Formula Media Lens. The government steps in and takes control of the company that makes the lenses and starts using them to manipulate what people see and think. We are also post energy crisis and the world has entered into something called the Magnetic Energy Agreement, an international law that forbids dependency on one source of energy over another.

1st: There is some nice artwork in the comic who is responsible for it and what do you think of it?

Richard: My primary artist is Patrick Berkenkotter, and I think he’s incredibly talented. On the second issue, he received a little help from Ronilson Freire who did the almost impossible task of matching Patrick’s work. Patrick’s attention to detail is probably what I love most about his work. He also has a great eye for perspective and layout. Ronilson is also quite capable of incredible detail and design.

1st: Why is Bill Glen important to this comic book?

Richard: Bill Glen developed fundamental programs and technology that run the Formula Media Lens. In issue 2 there is innuendo that he is tied into a bigger conspiracy, but what it is, nobody is quite sure.

1st: Who else is in the pages of “Myopia” that we should care about?

Richard: James Chase is Bill Glenn’s protégé; Matthew Glen, Bill’s Glenn’s son, seems to know something nobody else knows about his father’s work at Formula Media; and Molly Glen is trying to hold her family together. We also have Ledge Carver who is the CEO of Formula Media and Agni Shelton, the head of Lens Security, who is starting to make things quite difficult for Ledge and the Glenn’s.

1st: What is the main selling point of “Myopia”

Richard: Aside from the great writing and amazing illustration?! Seriously the great writing and the amazing illustration. That and there is a resurgence of old dystopian novels lately and Myopia brings this classic feel into a more contemporary setting.

1st: Would “Myopia” make a good movie, why or why not?

Richard: Myopia was originally a screenplay, so it would naturally do well on the big screen.

1st: Would you use the Formula Media lenses if they existed today for real?

Richard: Absolutely. They’re the coolest devices ever!

1st: How many issues are there going to be of ‘Myopia’ and would you like to see it.

Richard: Right now, there is a thick (40 pages per issue) four-issue story arch, but I already have some ideas for the next story arch. This is truly an expandable universe.

1st: Why do you keep writing comics?

Richard: I write in a lot of genres. Right now, I’m really digging comics. I love the collaboration, and I love the tools–especially how a writer can essentially tell two stories at the same time or work in two different timelines at the same time by using panels and lettering. I also love how everything that is usually left to the reader’s imagination in a prose novel can be shown with just a fraction of the cost it would take to display it on film.

1st: Which comic book character and not just from comics you worked on but anyone, are you most like and why?

Richard: Nobody has ever asked me that before. I guess Professor X. I like the idea that I’m so smart it hurts!

1st: How or what do you attribute your success to?

Richard: I put years into learning how to write. I went for school for it. I failed a lot. But I kept with it and that’s all you can do.

1st: What is the most enjoyable way for you to spend your day?

Richard: I love writing first thing in the morning until I just don’t want to write anymore, then I go to the gym and think about what I wrote, make notes and grade papers then wind down with friends and family if time permits. The days I work I try and stick to the same schedule, albeit more truncated.

1st: What do you have to say to those who read your work?

Richard: Thank you!

May 23, 2018, Mt. Laurel, NJ: Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the greatest crossover you didn’t see coming, Robots Vs Princesses #1! Heading up this grand mash-up of fantasy and sci-fi is the creative team of writer Todd Matthy (Saga of the Stormriders: the Lost Prince) and artist Nicolas Chapuis (World of Fiction). An all-ages story for the whole family that combines the fairy tale world of princesses and dragons with the action-packed science fiction epic of giant robots. But the princesses are no damsels in distress here, as it’s up to Zara and her robot friend Wheeler to save the Kingdom.

The comic event of the year has arrived! When plucky Princess Zara stumbles upon the Decimator defector Wheeler, she sets in motion events that will pit the spritely cleverness of fairy tale princesses against the raw power of giant robots! The dream match you never thought you’d see begins here. Don’t miss it!

“’All-ages fun that does not talk down to children. The book that bridges the gap between brother and sister while at the same time delighting parents.’ That would be my quote,” says writer Todd Matthy. “I wanted to create a comic for kids that not only respected their intelligence and curiosity, but their desire to become ‘grownups.’ I also wanted to create a comic that parents could read over and over again to their kids and not be bored by. A book they’d enjoy, too. If parents and children want to know what happens next, it’ll foster a love of reading and a mutually shared experience. Also, I wanted to create a book that adults without children could enjoy because it transports them back to their childhood.”

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Dynamite is now bringing the series to comic shops everywhere. And Robots Vs Princesses already has some big-name support behind it.

“Finding this comic was a delightful surprise.” – Mark Waid (Kingdom Come,  All-New Avengers, Archie)

“Fantastic fantasy from a promising newcomer” –David Lloyd (V for Vendetta, Aces Weekly)

“Fabulous and entertaining” –Ron Friedman (Writer: Transformers: The Movie)

“Todd and Nic have done an amazing job of creating this world that any kid would immediately fall in love with. Even adults. Legally, I’m an adult and I think this is awesome,” Admitted Editor Kevin Ketner. “I’m excited for kids and parents to read about this tough, cool princess and her friends joining up with robots to destroy evil. If that doesn’t appeal to you, you don’t know how to have fun.”

Robots Vs Princesses #1 has a cover by Nicolas Chapuis and will be solicited in the June issue of Diamond Previews catalog, the comic industry’s premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and scheduled to ship in August of 2018. Readers are encouraged to order through their local comic retailers or through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, iVerse, Madefire, and Dark Horse Digital. Fans are encouraged to follow Dynamite Entertainment’s social media channels for the latest updates on Dynamite Entertainment comic books and graphic novels.

Hellboy battles against Koshchei the Deathless and hordes of the undead in this new expansion for the tabletop game.

MILWAUKIE, Ore., (May 23, 2018)—Mantic Games, in partnership with Dark Horse Comics, is delighted to unveil a brand-new expansion for the Hellboy: The Board Game Kickstarter. This game-changing expansion is inspired by Hellboy Volume 8: Darkness Calls. It tells the tale of Hellboy’s fateful encounter with iconic characters such as Koshchei the Deathless and Henry Hood, the undead witchfinder.

With this expansion, players will be able to recreate the storyline by playing as Hellboy, or they can create their own ‘what if’ scenario to see how other members of the BPRD team would have fared against Koshchei and hideous undead warriors. It comes with new highly detailed miniatures of Henry Hood, Koshchei, undead witches and a variety of 15 undead minions.

The Kickstarter is now in its final week and continues to go from strength to strength. After initially raising $1 million in just over 24 hours, now more than 11,000 Hellboy fans around the world have backed the project. Backers have helped to unlock almost 50 stretch goals and the Agent Pledge now includes 118 miniatures, plus a host of upgraded components.

Inspired by Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comic book universe, the game is a co-operative experience in which players face off against some of the comic’s most famous foes. Up to four people take control of iconic BRPD members, such as Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Roger the Homunculus, before exploring gothic locations and uncovering ancient artifacts.

Featuring stunning, pre-assembled plastic miniatures, Mantic Games has worked closely with Dark Horse Comics and Mike Mignola to ensure the gaming pieces accurately capture the look and feel of the source material. What’s more, top games designer James M. Hewitt – who has previously worked on Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower, Necromunda: Underhive and Blood Bowl 2016 – has been drafted in to create a compelling game experience.

Hellboy has appeared in graphic novels and comic books, prose novels and short story collections, two animated features, two live-action films, toy lines and all manner of merchandise.
